If you want to suggest five Tamil Nadu dishes to a non-Tamil Nadu person, what would it be and why?

Many of these dishes may not have originated in TN but they are very popular dishes in TN and are consumed with Relish and Gusto. Some dishes are also eaten in other states like Karnataka or AP and some dishes originated in Kerala or Karnataka but still these are among Tamilnadus favorite dishes.

14 Idly with Chutney and Sambar

While the Idly has disputed origins with many people from Udupi claiming that the Idly was their discovery - the Mini Idly or 14 Idlies in Ghee was first served commercially in Saravana Bhavan and became a rage. It is a must try especially because of the Blend of Ghee and Onion Sambar. Delicious

Biriyani (Thalapakatti from Dindigul or Ambur Biriyani)

Biriyani was a discovery by the Mughals and is prevalent in every state in the South including the famous Malabar Biriyani. However Seeraga Samba Rice is unique to Tamilnadu and its delicious taste betters the Long Grained Afghani Basmati rice and its ability to soak in the spices is better than the Basmati. Try the Biriyani at Dindigul Thalapakatti or Haribhavanams or Junior Kuppanna. It would be a treat

The Parottas of Tamil Nadu

Kothu Parotta (Shredded Parotta with Chicken and Egg), Chilly Parotta, Bun Parotta, Ceylon Veechu Parotta, Virudhunagar Parotta and even the Plain Parotta served with Chicken Gravy and eaten with a Chicken Dish - is a Signature dish in many Tamil Nadu Non Veg Eateries.

Each of these dishes are unique in their taste and Madurai is the Capital City for Parottas. Yet you can get Tasty Parottas in every TN City be it Erode or CBE or Salem or Chennai.

The Paniyarams

A Famous dish for Tiffin or Dinner, the Paniyaram is usually served as a Pure Veg dish with a Spicy Tomato Based Chutney and a Coconut Chutney. Very popular in Coimbatore and Ramanathapuram. Actor Suriya loves this food very much as does Vadivelu and APJ Abdul Kalam.

Adayar Ananda Bhavans chain A2B serves tasty paniyarams as does Chennais Hotel Sangeetha (The Original Sangeetha in Mylapore).

Sambar Rice & Curd Rice

No Tamil Lunch is complete without finishing it off with Curd Rice especially in Restaurants. Likewise though there is a similar dish called Bisi Bela Huli Anna in Karnataka - the dish is eaten for Breakfast and is more liquid than the Tamilian Sambar Rice which is a staple dish for vegetarians and non vegetarians alike. Sambar Rice and Chips is Hotel Saravana Bhavans best selling lunch item for the Non A/C Self Service people for Lunch. Deliciously cooked in Dal. Rice, Ghee and vegetables and served with Papads and Pacchidi (Raita) - the Dish is worth it.

Curd rice is a tasty, cold end to a meal and is excellent for cooling down the stomach,

I did not mention the Masala Dosa or Bajjis because they are more popular and available in AP and Karnataka respectively.
